“smudge”.
as a verb:
to cause (something) to become messily smeared by rubbing it.
Inside
Within the small walls
confined to a tiny place
there resides a fear
that exists only here
willing itself
to escape
Within the small walls
witnessed on an empty wall
a dark smudge of ink
making one think
that someone
wanted to get out

Mysterious, this little smudge!

Certainly sounds like someone was trying to get out.
I like this take on the prompt. Nicely done poem.

Very interesting way to think of an ink smudge, as if someone is behind the wall wanting to get out! Love this. 🙂

Wow, Christine. You know this feels surreal to me… kinda like a cross between a mystery and sci-fi… I liked it!

Such a powerful image, that little smudge of ink, the only trace of someone’s desperate struggle to escape. Haunting words!

Thanks Ingrid. I think I was going for a little spookiness.
