Mangos – Tanka Poetry
Red-ripe mangos hang
In a tree full of treasure
Hoping they will fall
Strength of the tree gives me life
A reminder to grow free

I wrote this because there are three trees, in different yards, that I walk by in the mornings. The trees are so full of ripe mangos and I yearn to jump up and grab them or bring back a broom and whack them out of the trees. I don’t know the owners so I won’t be doing either but there is so much there it pains me to watch them go to waste. A few months ago, in a different yard, there was a tree full of grapefruit. I wish I could pick any of them. If my fruit trees start to grow so much fruit I will put it out by my mailbox to share with others for free.
that is so kind of you Christine! To put your fruit out for free! But where do you live where all this awesome fruit grows?

Florida! Today we ate the mango from the tree down the street. It was sooooo good. We don’t have fruit on our trees yet but when we do….

Surprising news! Today, one of the mango trees had a note on it that said Free Mangos, You Pick! I was able to reach one! This was the smaller tree but I am thankful

I appreciate your poem even more after reading the backstory. I understand your yearning. Maybe one of the trees will gift you one of these days. Also like you gathering strength from the strength of the tree.

Oh, I can totally imagine how you feel walking under the mango trees. They hang in a way that tempts one to want to grab them. Red mangoes sound delicious.

Those mangoes sound wonderful! I love frozen mango. It’s better than ice cream! When I lived in Arizona, I was shocked at how people had planted fruit trees and left the fruit to rot on the trees!! Unbelievable. Your poem is a great reminder to treasure the gifts of nature. ♥️

I saw the mangos again today. They are turning bright red! The ones on the ground have already been picked over by birds and squirrels. I know I would share if it was my tree! ❤️

My parents have a mango tree that produces the most delicious mangoes, and he often shares them with family and friends. He also freezes them so they can enjoy them throughout the year. Great poem, Christine!

Wonderful poem! I love that the mango tree reminds you to grow free!
It would pain me to see all the mangoes go to waste, too. Craving mangoes now.. 😋

You would be amazed at how many mangos are hanging off that one tree! I don’t think I would be exaggerating if I said it was probably about 200!
