“He went to sea in a thimble of poetry.”- Poet Warning, Jim Harrison
He went to sea in a thimble of poetry,
knotted loosely to words,
strung along the thin web,
laid out above the waters.
The vessel fills as words
engulf his mind and mist rises
to keep the chamber empty
ready to fill once more.
And as the tides roll and recede
he clings to the line
and stays afloat
until his mind weaves words
sending him back to shore.

I’m glad he has the strength to keep his craft afloat and to bring it to shore.

A great poem for a great line! I like how words ebb and flow in our minds, eventually bringing up back to our writing table!

Lovely parallels, and he must cling, yes, and that line says it all, clinging on as the tide recedes, the mist rises…brilliantly done…

You know, Christine, this makes sense… after all, the thimble has lots of holes, no?

Yes, almost like that little bit of water that gets in a row boat.

such an enjoyable read –
“strung along the thin web,
laid out above the waters. ”
the poet has to go far out to sea before seeing how the words join up

Love how you describe poem as a true lifeline, and way to get back to shore again after venturing out.

I can see a sail being sewn with the use of the thimble. Sail on in beautiful poetry.

I really enjoyed this !!!! Now, if it were as simple as heading out on a lake, quiet surrounding me, blue skies above … returning with the perfectly penned poem .. I would be a contented writer.

Really beautiful writing Christine! I like how you develop this metaphor.. and my favorite lines are:
“The vessel fills as words
engulf his mind and mist rises
to keep the chamber empty
ready to fill once more.”
Such a perfect description when we set sail to write a new poem:)
