Throwback Thursday #19 – Superstitions, Amulets, and Charms

Maggie is the host!

What makes you feel lucky? Is it a four leaf clover, a rabbit’s foot, or a lucky penny? I don’t think anything really brings luck except chance. I have had “lucky charms” over the years but nothing that ever lasted. I do love eating Lucky Charms! My favorite cereal!

What are you superstitious of? Will you walk under a ladder? What’s your lucky number? What if a black cat crosses your path? I am superstitious…I won’t pick up a “tails up” penny, I would walk under a ladder if I couldn’t go around it, I think black cats are mysterious but not scary. I am more of a believer of Karma rather than superstitions, if that is a comparative belief. I do think #2 is my lucky number but its more of an OCD thing than luck, I like things in two’s. Many years ago my late husband used to play his lucky numbers every week for the lottery. One week he didn’t get to it and yes, as you guessed, his numbers came up. I don’t think he would’ve been a millionaire but it was a big win. After that he never played the same numbers nor have I.

Where did you learn ideas concerning luck? Do you still have superstitions in your adult life? I don’t think I ever heard my parents talk about luck or superstitions. Most of my “knowledge” was regular kid stuff; lucky rabbits foot, 4 leaf clover…

Since this is the last week of the year I am curious – do you make resolutions, eat specific foods, or have traditions or superstitions to usher in the new year? I don’t make resolutions per say since they don’t stick. It isn’t that I won’t continue but honestly I forget. There have been times I would stop eating junk food, for example, then next thing you know I am buying chips and some ice cream, totally forgetting, but still feeling like it’s a fail. As a kid we used to run out at midnight banging pots and pans. As an adult we used to spend the night with my friends. I like the gatherings but not crazy about loud parties. Many years I have fallen asleep. I do like watching the ball drop in NYC, I think it looks like everyone is having a good time, even though I don’t want to be there!

  1. My grandson loved Lucky Charms! It is interesting how many people have a connection to numbers that I do not seem to have. I have no desire to attend New Years Festivities either. I am quite content to see the new year in from my couch – or my bed!
