This week’s Story Starter teaser is:
As the sound of a gunshot echoed in the hallway, a woman pushed open the door to my apartment and jumped inside. From the look in her eyes I could tell it was hell out there. She stood, panting, sweating, wearing an expression of fear and sorrow.
“What the heck is going on out there?” I asked.
“It’s Hell! The entire complex is in an uproar, everyone who carries has their gun out, it’s like a damn western movie.”
“What started it all?”
“Politics, like usual. The damn government has declared any person not born in the states be shot on sight! Don’t they realize that is most of this country or at least those who were born before 1950?”
Rebecca dropped to her knees in front of me. Neither of us was safe. We grew up together on the base, on the base in Japan! We were considered US citizens but we weren’t born here. How was the government finding out who was born here and who wasn’t?
“Hopefully, this will all come to an end soon. There is no way our country, the land of the free, could become such a bloody hell-hole based on one man’s stupid idea of worth!”
Gunshots erupted again and we both sank lower. We would be stuck here for now, at least we were stuck here with each other. But what about all of those innocent people?

This recurring xenophobia, the fear or hatred of foreigners shapes public policy and cultural attitudes across generations.

Unfortunately, the way things have been in the US have sort of masked that we really aren’t the only country with people like this.

You might think something like this could never actually happen, but Trump is loosening gun controls, making it easier for people — even the mentally ill — to get guns. And his MAGA-minions would love an order like this. Do you think they’d take the time to ask someone to show them their birth certificate? A very scary story, Christine.
