Lainey’s job
Lainey walked to the coop. There were at least a dozen chickens so collecting the eggs required a basket. Of course, like almost every morning, Lainey forgot the basket in the shed and would try to carry them without dropping any. She knew her dad would count how many there were. He said he didn’t do it to check on her, rather he did it to make sure all the hens were still laying. Her dad told her that after about two years, maybe three, most hens stopped laying eggs, sort of like women getting too old to have babies.

I could imagine her trying to not drop an armful of eggs. Felt like that when tomatoes came in this year. 😊

I always try to carry too much, knowing the fate, but somehow thinking it won’t happen. Like groceries. Will it really kill me to walk to the car one extra time so that I don’t drop cans or fruit all over the driveway?

This reminds me of my childhood. I hated it then, but I miss those fresh eggs now. It’s a treat when I visit my mom, and she sends me home with dozens of eggs.

Dear Christine,
What a lovely way to teach a lesson. He sounds like a wonderful dad. Nicely told.

what happens when a hen stops laying eggs? sad to think about it, but it probably ends as dinner.

I never ate my hens. I couldn’t. Not after talking to them and looking at them for years. I just let them live an egg free life until their day came.

Even you wrote about chickens and eggs, there is so much more beneath that suggests something about the life of this family. Wonderfully written.

Thank you. I actually based it sort of on real life.

Careful with those eggs! I didn’t know that, though I guess it makes sense.
