Weekend Writing Prompt #460 – Gooseberry

https://sammiscribbles.wordpress.com/2026/03/21/weekend-writing-prompt-460-gooseberry/comment-page-1/#respond

At grandma’s house
The trick was to find
the bushes that had
the most fruit.
The front garden
had no gooseberries,
only pine needles,
some sap and
my memories.
Where have all
the berries gone
grandma saved
that were for me.

  1. Christine, my mother told me a story about gooseberries and a trick she played on her cousin. My grandmother had a bunch of gooseberry bushes and would make pies. Of course a ripe gooseberry is slightly yellow. So she picked some berries and told her cousin Ernestine that they were delicious. She pretended to eat a couple and sure enough Ernestine picked some green ones and popped them in her mouth. She crunched down on them and the soul puckering taste took a hold of her body. Needless to say she got into a little trouble for tricking her cousin… But she still laughed about it for the rest of her life!
