Grandma’s Soup

Grandmas soup was not well known
But it was there no matter what
I’ve tried to make it, now I’m grown
I think I need her special pot

I made it now and then again
Hoping that it tastes as great
And sometimes I am damn near close
It puts me in a nostalgic state

First I put some water on and wait for it to boil
I hate to put in too, too much and have the flavor spoil.

The cabbage head needs to be cut
and chopped but its all used
I need to keep the lid tight shut
So tastes’ll mingle and fuse

Next comes some light seasoning
Mostly pepper and some salt
Then I chop each onion ring
If I forgot it’d be my fault

And now comes that one special twist
The taste it took years to find
Some thick and yummy short cut ribs
The red and beefy kind.

Let it simmer for a while
It can never be too much
I lick my lips and show a smile
It still misses grandma’s touch.

Marion’s prompt guidelines

As the nights draw in and the chill settles around us, my thoughts turn to the simple warmth of food — food shared with family and friends around a kitchen table, or eaten from a tray beside the fire, curtains drawn against the dismal dark.

For this week’s prompt, let’s write about a food or drink that brings you comfort.

What gives you that touch of happiness when you think of it, smell it, or taste it? Does it recall a certain time, place, or person? Is it your “go-to” after a difficult day — or something that exists only in your imagination?

  • Form: Any
  • Length: Up to 24 lines
  • Include: The word “comfort”

  1. What is it about that indefinable something that makes a dish so special and almost impossible to replicate? I love this Christine. (Plus, I think the extra four lines are like extra ingredients – sometimes you just need to change the recipe!)
