This is a picture of two women swimming underwater next to a sunken ship.

*****For any participants that do NOT like restrictions, please feel free to participate in any way you would like. It is great to read the contributions!****

  1. Set up a timer or sit near a clock so you can keep track of the six minutes you will be writing.
  2. You can either use one of the prompts (photo or written) or you can free-write.
  3. Get ready and write for 6 minutes, that is it! Can you write a complete story? Can you think of a new Sonnet? Can you write 400 words? 400? 500? There are no restrictions on what kind of writing you do, but you should try to be actively writing for six minutes.
  4. After you are done writing, include your word count and then post back to this page #Simply6Minutes or include your link in the comments section. Pingbacks are enabled.
  5. *Feel free to leave your work completely unedited. I believe it is good to see, especially for new writers, that even very seasoned writers don’t write a perfect first draft.*
  6. Have fun, challenge yourself if you’d like, read and respond to others’ posts.

Thank you for participating!

  1. […] “Let’s hold our breath together.” Anita had told her teenage daughter when she’d hesitated to enter the water. It was during last summer’s tropical island vacation. That moment came flooding back to her as she hugged her daughter who’d just tearfully confided in her about a scheduled biopsy of a suspicious lump in her breast.Anita took her daughter’s face in her hands and spoke softly.“These things are almost always not serious, Sweetheart.”Then she grabbed her daughter’s hands and squeezed them.“Let’s hold our breath together.”https://christinebialczak.com/2025/01/14/simply-6-minutes-welcome-to-the-challenge-01-07-2025/ […]

  2. Beneath the azure expanse of the Caribbean Sea, two women glided effortlessly, their bodies buoyed by the gentle rise and fall of the warm water. Ellie and Maya had been drawn to the allure of the sunken ship, an ancient relic of maritime history, resting serenely on the ocean floor, cloaked in a blanket of coral and aquatic life.

As they swam closer, the shadow of the ship loomed larger, a ghost of yesteryears slumbering in silence. Sunlight filtered through the water, casting a dappled glow on the rusting hull, illuminating the vibrant corals that had claimed it as their home. The ship’s once proud deck lay entombed beneath layers of sand and reef, a testament to time’s relentless passage.

Ellie pointed excitedly at the school of parrotfish that danced around the ship’s bow, their colors vibrant against the muted tones of the wreck. They moved together effortlessly, a whisper of color in the turquoise sea. Maya nodded, her heart racing with the thrill of adventure. They had dreamed of this moment, of exploring the mysteries deep beneath the waves, and now it was unfolding before them.

With synchronized grace, the pair descended, their movements fluid and rhythmic. The water embraced them like an old friend, enveloping them in its calm. They reached the ship’s main deck, peering into the darkened hold where shadows lingered, hiding secrets waiting to be unveiled. The air was still, thick with the scent of salt and decay, stirring a mix of curiosity and trepidation within them.

Maya swam to a broken porthole, her fingers brushing against the jagged edge, and Ellie watched, mesmerized, as she ventured further inside. The interior was a museum of memories—broken crates and scattered remnants told stories of voyages taken long ago. As Maya explored, Ellie felt a pang of longing, the weight of time pressing against them both.

Suddenly, a flash of movement caught Ellie’s eye. A large sea turtle glided past, its shell mottled and ancient. It turned, as if beckoning them to follow. Without a word, they swam after it, deeper into the underwater world. The turtle led them away from the wreck, through sprawling gardens of seaweed and schools of silvery fish.

As they emerged into the sunlight, laughter bubbled between them, echoing through the water. They had not just discovered the ship—they had uncovered a deeper bond forged through shared wonder and exploration, beneath the sea’s serene surface.
