Poor Jack
When autumn starts they start to grow
for whats intended, they don’t know
But soon the autumn air will come
Everyone buys at least just one
They bring it home and rub its skin
The pumpkin has good seeds within
They’re pulled out fast, while its carved slow
what will it be? We still don’t know
And then the face is seen at last
Its shape makes shaded areas cast
And then the candle comes to burn
An LED is smart I learn
Then Halloween ends for the year
The Jack-o-lantern stands with fear
What will it do now that its done?
There isn’t really any fun
Then days past quick and nights turn cold
Big ole Jack is getting old
He starts to droop and cave on in
drool goes running down his chin
Then to a pile out in the yard
He’s left to rot with disregard

Your lines are so true! Here in KS, we have pig farmers who insist that their livestock would love to have those pumpkins that have reached their end stage as food. So it’s good they don’t just waste away.

When I had chickens when I lived in CT they ate everything pretty much and I will tell you, they were so happy and healthy and their eggs were delicious! My neighbor has chickens and sometimes I give them leftovers and stuff but not like I did up north.

I believe you! The local farms here provide healthy and delicious produce from their gardens and the meat from the local butcher seems so much healthier!

People used to make comments about me letting the chickens eat all the scraps but they loved it! I wouldn’t usually give them chicken just because it seems sort of mean, but if I did I just told them it was beef! Lol. They loved shrimp and mashed potatoes!

Fun poem that also makes us think. I’ve used papayas too as they are softer to carve.

I would have never thought of that. Next year I might try that. I’m a horrible pumpkin carver

I don’t like rats, but I guess they have to eat something.

My son had pet rats years ago. It took me a while to allow him to have rats in the house but I have to say they are fantastic pets! So smart and really clean!
