Le Pho (1907-2001), Femme au perroquet (Lady with A Parrot) (1938)ink and gouache on silk

The lady and her bird

Upon a branch he softly lands
to view the beauty all his own
Tiptoe stepping to her hands
His deepest love is what was shown.
Then softly pecking at her hair
she hummed a simple tune
and sat with him without a care
along with her soft croon.
To know inside that this was fate
a heaven she’d accept
She did not stop nor hesitate
for all his love she kept.

  1. I love the sweet relationship you have seen in this painting, Christine, between the bird and the lady, the gentle rhyme and rhythm you’ve used to evoke it, and the sounds in the phrase ‘tiptoe stepping to her hands’.
