For your Poetics prompt today, I would like you to select one of the artworks I have included in this post, or you may peruse Sunnyside’s selection here. Once you have selected an artwork, write a poem blending ekphrasis and theme(choose one from the list).
- ekphrasis: a literary description of or commentary on a visual work of art
- theme: a subject or topic of discourse or of artistic representation
- women
- flowers
- landscapes
- family

The lady and her bird
Upon a branch he softly lands
to view the beauty all his own
Tiptoe stepping to her hands
His deepest love is what was shown.
Then softly pecking at her hair
she hummed a simple tune
and sat with him without a care
along with her soft croon.
To know inside that this was fate
a heaven she’d accept
She did not stop nor hesitate
for all his love she kept.

Christine, I love the relationship between the bird and the lady! A lovely, gentle write, just like the painting.

I love the sweet relationship you have seen in this painting, Christine, between the bird and the lady, the gentle rhyme and rhythm you’ve used to evoke it, and the sounds in the phrase ‘tiptoe stepping to her hands’.

This is so sentimental and sweet. Her bird companion warms my heart, and your poem brings a smile to her lips.
