100 Forms of Poetry: #75 Rondeau

My New Job

Starting anew in a foreign-ish place
Hoping to be a part of the race
Getting back out there to make some dough
Meeting some people that I don’t know
Working with others their time I embrace

Starting each day like walking in space
Getting there early to lessen my pace
With sights on the building I have to go
Starting in a new place

Keeping my spot clean leaving no trace
I want to be good so they will not replace
Sometimes its busy but other times slow
Staying engaged allows me to show
I reentered the workforce with so much grace
Starting in a new place

I started working a few weeks ago for The Pittsburgh Pirates here in FL at their spring training facility. I was never a huge baseball fan, although I didn’t NOT like it… Anyhow, it has been great meeting new people and next weekend is the opening game!

rondeau

  • 15 lines long;
  • Three stanzas:
    • a quintet (five-line stanza);
    • a quatrain (four-line stanza);
    • and a sestet (six-line stanza);
  • Rhyme scheme: aabba aabR aabbaR.
  • Refrain: L9 and L15
    • The refrain (R) is short;
    • The refrain (R) consists of a phrase taken from L1;
  • All the other lines are longer than R and share the same metrical length.

  1. Christine congratulations on the new job! There are probably some very jealous baseball fans out there who would love to work for that franchise! As for the Rondeau, it is a favorite form. Though the form is supposed to be lines of 8 syllables according to my definition…. Still this is a lovely poem filled with the hope and desire to make a good impression on the new coworkers!
