BATTLE OF THE BANDS: December

STMcC Presents 'BATTLE OF THE BANDS'

https://stmccpresentsbattleofthebands.blogspot.com/

This is ‘BATTLE OF THE BANDS‘ (‘BOTB‘) where you listen to different recordings and vote for the one you like best. A new Battle gets posted on the 1st of each month

Last week for Song Lyric Sunday I picked We are the World so I thought this would be a fitting choice to battle

Far’s Version 2009

The original version 1984

The 2004 version

or the 2014 version

It’s Christmas time
There’s no need to be afraid
At Christmas time
We let in light and we banish shade

And in our world of plenty
We can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world
At Christmas time

But say a prayer
Pray for the other ones
At Christmas time it’s hard
But when you’re having fun

There’s a world outside your window
And it’s a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing is
The bitter sting of tears

And the Christmas bells that ring there
Are the clanging chimes of doom
Well, tonight thank God it’s them instead of you

And there won’t be snow in Africa this Christmas time
The greatest gift they’ll get this year is life, ohh
Where nothing ever grows
No rain or rivers flow
Do they know it’s Christmas time at all? Ohh

Here’s to you
Raise a glass for everyone
Here’s to them
Underneath that burning sun
Do they know it’s Christmas time at all?

Feed the world
Feed the world
Feed the world
Let them know it’s Christmas time again
Feed the world
Let them know it’s Christmas time

Feed the world
Let them know it’s Christmas time again
Feed the world
Let them know it’s Christmas time

Feed the world
Let them know it’s Christmas time again
Feed the world
Let them know it’s Christmas time

Feed the world
Let them know…

  1. Loved reading this

Wow, I enjoyed listening to the different versions of “We are the World” for the Battle of the Bands! Each one had its own unique twist. My favorite was Far’s Version 2009. It had a great energy and modern touch. I find it interesting how this song has been remade over the years. I’m curious, what inspired you to choose this song for the Battle of the Bands? That was a fantastic blog post! I loved the different versions of “We are the World” you shared. My favorite was Far’s Version 2009. The energy and modern touch were captivating. It’s interesting to see how this song has been remade over the years. What inspired you to choose this song for the Battle of the Bands?

    • CHRISTINE, it looks like I saved you from a Christmas BOTB shutout. (You owe me. The day I put the Monkees up against the Beatles, you can vote Monkees and save me.)

Git you a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year!!

      • Oh, I’ll definitely remind you! I am the “godfather” of the BOTB mob, and when the godfather does you a favor, you repay him when he asks or… well, you know what happens. ;^D

The $64,000 question right now is…
        Who was your favorite Monkee?

      • >>… “Bahahahaha! You make me laugh.”

Oddly enough, our fellow BOTBer, [Link> CAThy, has often said the same thing about me in her comment sections. Personally… I think you’re both protly kinda sick and should see a sykiatrist!

        >>… “Who was my favorite? Probably Davy”

RIGHT! You win 64,000 kudos and a “How do ya do?”

Davy is *always* the right answer! The Monkees were massively popular with us kids back in the late 1960s when the world was completely crazy and yet relatively sane.

Even now, at the age of 64, I *still* remember being in 2nd–4th grade in Orange County, Kalifornia, during the age of ‘Monkees’. After school, we kids were imprisoned at Mrs. Eckland’s ‘Daytime Prison For Kids Whose Poor Parents Worked’. That’s where I met my first girlfriend, Mary Ellen. Every time she would hang upside-down on the Monkey Bars, I would run up and kiss her. (I’ve recently begun to suspect that she did it on purpose!)

Anyway,… The Monkees, and Monkey Bars, will always remind me of… of… Hmmm… well, I’m sure I’ll remember what they remind me of when I’m 65.

My favorite Monkees song and favorite Monkees episode is [Link> THIS!

Christine – seriously now! – have a very merry Christmas.

  2. Seems like they’re trying to turn this into some kind of classic. I didn’t care for it much at all. Not a song I want to hear each Christmas.

IN this match I guess I’ll go with the original 1984 version. But I won’t go out of my way to hear it again.

  3. A Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday, and Season’s Greetings to you, CHRISTINE! I sincerely hope that you find yourself and your family greatly blessed in 2024.

Now, to be bluntly honest, no song can make me change the radio station at Christmastime faster than this one can. My hand doesn’t reach for the dial faster even when the song coming through my speakers is ‘Santa Baby’ (Arrrggghhhh!)

However, in this Battle I will cast a vote for “Far’s Version 2009”. Primarily because the rough-edged electric guitar helps to balance out the lyrics and aids in making the song feel a bit different.

May you bless and be blessed!!
