Song Lyric Sundays

This week the theme is to find an acoustic rock song.

Back in college, my best friend and I started following a local band called The Acoustic Reptiles. I had a crush on the main singer and the drummer loved my best friend, even though she didn’t really feel the same. We had a lot of fun going to different bars, even getting up on stage with them and singing in these places! When we started following them we were not 21 yet so it was nice for us because it was an easy way to get into a bar without having to worry about a fake ID. We got in because we were “with the band”!

While doing my research I realized this was going to be a hard week, there are so many great songs in this category and I only looked at one website! https://www.guitarlobby.com/best-acoustic-rock-songs/

Tracy Chapman just won an award for Fast Car so I won’t pick this song since its already had notoriety recently. I do have a side story…That best friend I mentioned above and I used to drive around with a six pack of beer, a pack of cigarettes and a “boom box” (since her car didn’t have a stereo in it.) We would listen to Tracy Chapman over and over until one day the tape got too old and broke. We stopped the car, got out, and cried as we had a small burial of our favorite tape feeling heartbroken that our Tracy died.

Some of the others I was going to choose: Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd, Hotel California by The Eagles, and Mrs. Robinson by Simon and Garfunkel.

My choice for this week is The Joker by Steve Miller Band

Some people call me the space cowboy, yeah
Some call me the gangster of love
Some people call me Maurice
‘Cause I speak of the pompatus of love

People talk about me, baby
Say I’m doing you wrong, doing you wrong
Well, don’t you worry, baby, don’t worry
‘Cause I’m right here, right here, right here, right here at home

‘Cause I’m a picker, I’m a grinner
I’m a lover and I’m a sinner
I play my music in the sun

I’m a joker, I’m a smoker
I’m a midnight toker

I get my loving on the run

You’re the cutest thing that I ever did see
I really love your peaches, want to shake your tree
Lovey-dovey, lovey-dovey, lovey-dovey all the time
Oh, baby, I’ll sure show you good time

‘Cause I’m a picker, I’m a grinner
I’m a lover and I’m a sinner
I play my music in the sun

I’m a joker, I’m a smoker
I’m a midnight toker
I get my loving on the run

I’m a picker, I’m a grinner
I’m a lover and I’m a sinner
I play my music in the sun

I’m a joker, I’m a smoker
I’m a midnight toker
I sure don’t want to hurt no one

People keep talking about me, baby
Say I’m doing you wrong
Well, don’t you worry, don’t worry, no, don’t worry, mama
‘Cause I’m right here at home

You’re the cutest thing I ever did see
I really love your peaches, want to shake your tree
Lovey-dovey, lovey-dovey, lovey-dovey all the time
C’mon, baby, and I’ll show you a good time

  1. I dated this girl who was so in love with The Steve Miller Band that any time one of his songs was playing, she didn’t want me to talk. I out up with that because she was the cutest thing that I ever did see. Nice choice, Christine.
