I was looking for a song that I had thought of to use but couldn’t remember but since I find such fascination in irony I had to use these two songs. Have you ever read “The Sound of Thunder” by Rad Bradbury? If not, you can get it free online as a pdf. It is one of my favorite stories that I used to use to teach my English class. I will actually try and put the link after the music. It is a short story but just marvelously written, in my opinion.
Anyhow, on with Battle of the Bands
An old man turned 98
He won the lottery and died the next day
It’s a black fly in your Chardonnay
It’s a death row pardon two minutes too late
And isn’t it ironic, don’t you think?
It’s like rain on your wedding day
It’s a free ride when you’ve already paid
It’s the good advice that you just didn’t take
And who would’ve thought, it figures
Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down, he thought
“Well, isn’t this nice?”
And isn’t it ironic, don’t you think?
It’s like rain on your wedding day
It’s a free ride when you’ve already paid
It’s the good advice that you just didn’t take
And who would’ve thought, it figures
Well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything’s okay and everything’s going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out
When you think everything’s gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face
A traffic jam when you’re already late
A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It’s like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It’s meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn’t it ironic, don’t you think?
A little too ironic
And, yeah, I really do think
It’s like rain on your wedding day
It’s a free ride when you’ve already paid
It’s the good advice that you just didn’t take
And who would’ve thought, it figures
And, yeah, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
Life has a funny, funny way of helping you out
Helping you out

Great song choice, Christine. Morrisette’s version got a LOT of airplay here. Pinky Dread is a delightful variation and gets my vote 😉
Thanks for sharing “The Sound of Thunder” Definitely food for thought.

I stopped listening to Top 40 radio some time in the 1990’s, so I had never heard this one before. I’m not a big reggae fan, so while Pinkie Dread did a pretty good cover, I’ll vote for Alanis Morrisette. Good song, by the way. I especially like the line “It’s the good advice that you just didn’t take”; it’s the story of my life. The other good one was “A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break.”

I recall the Bradbury story. Not sure if I read it, but I did see a movie that was based on or inspired by the story. Don’t remember the film much, but I recall reading discussions about the book and the film.
Pinky’s version is very creative and well done, but still I’ve got to go with the original. Morrisette’s version of “Ironic” is iconic.
My vote is for Alanis Morrisette.

Even though this song gets played ad nauseum here in Canuckland, I’m still going with Alanis. It still gives the vibe it’s meant to be plus…I’m just not a fan of Reggae

Christine,
Pinky Dread is a nice change over the original artist by long shot. Please give my vote to the this group.

That song gets played to death here in Canada on Classic Rock radio. Since I’ve heard the original way too many times, I’m going with the newer, fresher reggae version by Pinky Dread. Love the name, too! 🙂

I always found that song annoying, although it’s become nostalgic enough that it’s less annoying these days. And the cover you posted is somewhat better just because it is not sung by someone whose voice sounds like a dying duck.
But there is still the issue that none of that is actually ironic. I thought this was brilliant… in Weird Al Yankovic’s “Word Crimes” (mid-2010s, to the tune of Blurred Lines), there’s a line that says something like “I hope you can tell the difference / between irony and coincidence.” On the screen at that time in the music video is an infographic that says “Irony” with a picture of a fire truck on fire, and “Not Irony” with a picture of rain on someone’s wedding day. 😂😂😂

the relevant part is around 2:38… I got the wording a little wrong, but the punchline is there.

That was great! I’d probably like it even more if I’d heard the original song that Al was parodying.
The one that really annoys me is “I could care less.” Arrrrrghhh!
Three-fourths of all people write and say it incorrectly, INCLUDING professional writers. Unbelievable!

I was aware of the existence of the original song when this parody was released, but I never particularly liked it.
I think my grammatical pet peeve (which is not mentioned in the song) is people who write “everyday” when they mean “every day.” The two are not interchangeable.

I’ve probably committed that sin many times, so…
I could care less. 😉

Excellent song choice! I used to listen to Alanis back in the day. But, I have to agree with McCarthy here… Pinky Dread was a breath of fresh air. They are getting my vote today.

I dig irony, too. How could I not? My whole life seems somewhat ironic. (A lot of people don’t realize this, but God has a sense of humor. How could he not? He invented it!)
I’ve not read “The Sound of Thunder” by Rad Bradbury, but I have read “The Sound and the Fury’ by William Faulkner. Half a point?
I never heard this song before, either. In the slower sections, Alanis Morissette sounds a lot to me like Rickie Lee Jones (one of my favorite musical artists). Unfortunately, the fast verses just sound too loud and harsh for my old, delicate ears. (When I want loud and harsh, I go to Radio Birdman or Eddie And The Hot Rods.)
I appreciated the lyrics by Morissette, but I liked the Reggae sound of PINKY DREAD best. (Somehow even the words “pinky” and “dread” right next too each other strikes me as kinda-sorta ironic.)
Very good Battle match-up, Christine!
