Today in the United States, we celebrate a federal holiday that originated as a Texas State one: Juneteenth, a unique contraction of June 19th. Originating in the last days of the US Civil War, it is a holiday that celebrates freedom and commemorates liberation:

Truth in History
It was not until I was older that I understood that freedom from slavery did not encompass true freedom from prejudice and discrimination. I did not know about Juneteenth and what it meant to our country and our people. I am proud to say that I grew up learning that the color of someone’s skin did not make them different than I was. Sadly, I only learned about the atrosities of the world around me as an adult and I fear for the future, for those who are not told the truths of our world. Color, money, status, birthrights, sexual orientation, opinion – are all equal opportunity ideas and should be seen as a way of bringing people together.
Growing up healthy
And still I did not know it
The truth should be told

Well that is good news. Being home all the time I don’t even know what day of the week it is let alone if banks are closed!
