Book Review: Fantasticland

The story is so believable you want to Google it!

Fantasticland by Mike Bockoven

Fantasticland is a theme park like no other. Built to be a place where “everyone is happy” was the dream in the 1970’s just like the opening of Disney World. Located on the Florida Coast, one thing the builders didn’t consider was the weather. After a storm comes and cuts the theme park off from the rest of the state, Fantasticland turns very dark.

What happens when people get scared and desperate? For some they look to bond with others, to form alliances to feel safe. Others hide in fear. At Fantasticland there are many different factions that form when they are completely out of touch with the outside world. Cell phones no longer have power, and no power supply is available to charge them. Food is abundant until some realize they might be running out. As for the workers, the struggle lies between taking care of the guests and taking care of themselves.

I give this story four out of five stars because it was so eerily realistic but warn that the amount of violence and level at which the author is able to depict it is remarkable. Without giving any spoilers, this book pushes all the boundaries of social interaction and the ability to navigate through a large-scale crisis. Throughout the book you are torn between groups, imagining which you would join and which you would definitely avoid. The question is, how long can people last like this?

    • I was so hooked even though it was very graphic. I honestly googled it to see if it was a true story. I listened to it on Audible and the way it was told was almost so unprofessional to make it sound so realistic, like the person was really there talking about it, not just reading the story aloud.

      • I sucked it up and got Audible. It is $15 a month I think but the amount of free books is amazing. I have hundreds of Audible Originals that are free. I save my credits for books I see that I know cost a lot. Like the stephen king…I have found some of the most amazing authors. It really is a good deal if you can find the deals. Every so often they will offer a free book for a limited amount of time. Let me know if you want any more info from a customer point of view

    • Some of the books I read I wish I had read an honest review beforehand. I guess I have pretty high expectations so if its boring or really poorly written I think others should know that. It’s too bad that no one was honest with the author before publishing. Then again, people have different tastes so something I love might be something someone else cannot stand to read.
