Book Review: Fairy Tale

Five out of Five Stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Stephen King figures out how to bring Fairy Tales to life!

Fairy Tale by Stephen King is a story about a high school athlete who accidentally befriends a grumpy recluse, Mr. Bowditch, who lives in a house Charlie passes on his ride home from school. Charlie has not had an easy life after his mother was killed when he was a young boy. The death of his mother sent his father into a drunken spiral, putting Charlie in the place of caretaker at an early age.

A few years earlier Charlie prayed for one thing and promises God that if his father stops drinking he will someday repay this debt. His father is now sober and Charlie thinks that meeting Mr. Bowditch might be the repayment he had promised. Charlie helps nurse Bowditch back to health after falling from his ladder outside, the place Charlie first found him. After Bowditch passes away he leaves Charlie his house, his dog, and a cassette tape with a crazy story about portals and gold.

Charlie is thrust into a land of Fairy Tales where he is considered the “Fair One” sent to them to overthrow their evil leader and return peace to their world. The biggest problem is that Charlie is there to help heal his dog, not meet other people who claim to know all about him. When they start talking about Mr. Bowditch with high accolades, Charlie decides they are worth listening to, and so the fairy tale begins.

I gave this story five out of five stars because of the depth to which Stephen King brings in so many well-known stories and makes them so believable. Through Charlie’s story, you won’t ever believe Fairy Tales are just stories. I listened to this book on Audible for 24 hours and 6 minutes and was not disappointed at all. King leads us through this land that we are familiar with from stories we were told as children, giving us the feeling that this world does exist somewhere. His believable characters, along with his take on various tales, make for a great story.

    • oh wow, some are great! Depends on if you like bloody horror or supernatural…then there is just really twisted…One good one to start with that is bizarre but not over the top is The Institute. The Long Walk was one of his new ones and if you want me to tell you what was good or bad about it with spoilers I will. I wouldn’t waste the time reading the whole thing. Its really drawn out.
