As our eyes met across the busy café tables, I was struck with the feeling that this might not go as well as I hoped, but gamely I smiled.

I could understand their reaction, I’m not the type you meet every day, though I’ve often glimpsed signs of recognition when others see me.  Though they then quickly turn to their family and friends, even their pets, before scurrying away.

Sometimes I think they suspect I have measles, but the kids seem to take it better.  Some have even asked if I climbed out of a book or was I there for their playtime.  Kids, always about them, but…
