Ragtag Daily Prompt: Temper https://ragtagcommunity.wordpress.com/2023/04/24/rdp-monday-temper/
The hot anger rises
and tempers soon flare
their innocent squeals
fill the thick sultry air
Adults do not know
that they are okay
to allow these young kids
to go ’bout and play
they think that the kids
are not being good
or that they’re not fine
doing what they should
‘Cause no one has told them
that playing is fine
that some noise is okay
a laugh’s not a whine
All they can feel
is shame and despair
to think that the public
does not really care
that they are the ones
struggling the most
needing some help
all bumps never coast
in their sheltered world
noise is never for fun
it just means that someone
is coming undone
So why can’t we help them
to see that the kids
are doing exactly
like all others did?

I thought of all the kids I used to work with and the families they came from. The parents were so used to being judged for the “bad behavior” of their kids that they didn’t have the ability to see that some of the squealing and screaming was just for fun and was okay. When parents are tormented with shame and constantly being blamed for the “poor behavior” of their children the lines between acceptable and unacceptable behavior start to blur. Who can blame them for feeling this way? They see a face talking to them and they barely hear what is being said because they only see the mouth moving and feel like they are being talked at. I don’t think there is enough empathy in our world.
