Walnut Street: Phantom Rider (A Botanic Hill Detectives Mystery)

Expected Publication Date: November 9th, 2021

Genre: MG Mystery/ Middle Grade (For fans of Nancy Drew type mysteries)

Objects of value have been disappearing from the Mayfield family’s rural California horse ranch. The Botanic Hill Detectives—Moki Kalani, Rani Kumar, and twins Lanny and Lexi Wyatt—are hired to come for a week to investigate.

Legend has it somewhere on the Mayfields’ forty-acre property is a long-lost gold mine. It was supposedly staked by thirteen-year-old Ben Mayfield’s five-time great-grandfather, “Papa” Mayfield, in 1875.

Adding to the excitement, a nervous Ben reveals a frightening secret to the detectives. At the ranch, he alone has seen a threatening black-clad figure on horseback whom he calls the Phantom Rider. Who is this mysterious person? Is he responsible for the thefts? Where is the lost gold mine? And what’s going on in the nearby, snake-infested ghost town of Rainbow Flats? The four intrepid detectives aim to find out.

About the Author

Sherrill Joseph will be forever inspired by her beautiful students in the San Diego public schools where she taught for thirty-five years before retiring and becoming a published author.

The author has peopled and themed her mysteries with characters after her own responsible, role-model students, of various abilities, disabilities, races, cultures, and interests. She believes that children need to find themselves and those unlike themselves in books for developing accepting, anti-racist world citizens.

Sherrill is a native San Diegan where she lives in a 1928 Spanish-style house in a historic neighborhood with her adorable bichon frisé-poodle mix, Jimmy Lambchop, who blogs.

Her books are recipients of two Gold Awards from Mom’s Choice Book Awards, a Gold Award from Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards, three awards from Story Monsters Approved, and numerous other children’s book awards. She is a member of SCBWI, the Authors Guild, and Blackbird Writers. Watch for many more adventures with the Botanic Hill Detectives!

Where’s My Joey

By Wendy Monica Winter

I was on Goodreads and this story popped up. It made me smile and feel sadness at the same time. I wrote to the author, Wendy, letting her know why her book title caught my attention and affected me the way it did. She wrote back immediately and told me about why she wrote the book. I let her know that I put my name in for the book Giveaway. She sent me the PDF of her book. It is perfect for me in so many ways that I wanted to share it.

Tale Weaver – #303 – Confusion – November 26th

Confusion with the Cat: A Cat in the Hat FanFiction Tale

The Cat in the Hat knew nothing at all

About raising kids, the big or the small

The one thing he knew that he knew he’d get right

Was to keep the kids busy from morning to night.

He kept lots of tricks and toys up his sleeve

He always made sure a clean house he did leave

But the kids never knew when he was coming or going

He’d come when the sun shone and with the wind blowing.

The biggest confusion they had with the Cat

Was they wondered what he kept up in his red and white hat.

He said he had toys and fish and some games

And animals and clowns and roasting marshmallow flames.

But if he had all those things hidden way up inside

Did he put them in there to keep private or hide?

The kids knew the Cat would come back some new day

With all of the things they needed to play.

Books…

My thoughts on books…

I wrote four and published them for children.

I love to read, or used to love it, and hoping that with the new book I won last week that I regain my love. I never lost it, just lost the motivation to sit and read and concentrate on what I was reading. I think the concentration is key. Not that it has to be for intellectual knowledge, but just so I don’t have to reread the same page over and over…

I just got a story published in two magazines!

I write every day and hope to have more books published! Non-fiction and fiction for children.

About my books

Penelope is my Great-niece. The night that my niece, Susan, gave birth I was in Florida visiting with my father. That was the first night I wrote the first book, Penelope. It really is a poem and although I love the content, now after learning so many things about writing and publishing, there are some changes I would make, and probably will, when I discontinue my contract with Page Publishing.

The second book, Penelope Picks Her Pals, was inspired by a first-grade classroom I worked in as a paraprofessional. That year I had written a “book” and included all of the kids in the class. I used alliteration throughout the entire book. It was so long ago, but if I remember correctly, I made a copy for each student before leaving that position, to go to my first teaching position. I love alliteration, the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words (Webster). Penelope Picks Her Pals is an alliteration book. It is a tongue twister. It is definitely for an adult to read to youngsters because of the vocabulary. While reading this at a local library I had the children laughing because I had such a hard time reading it fluently.

The third book, Penelope’s New Puppy, in my opinion is the best. It is about Penelope getting a new puppy from her grandma, which is my sister-in-law Jean. The book is about colors and opens up discussion for parents to have with their children exploring colors. Penelope wants to name her puppy according to the color and tries to come up with some names, yet she doesn’t know what the puppy will look like yet.

The fourth book, Penelope Still Picks Suzie, is a story about Penelope and a classmate she has that has a hard time behaving in school. I wrote this book because I began my teaching career in a school for socially-emotionally disturbed children. It was at this school that I learned all the behaviors that come with childhood conflict and trauma. When I say all the behaviors, I mean all the behaviors. Anyhow, what I learned was that these kids are stigmatized because they don’t know how to act correctly, which in turn isolates them, and makes behaviors escalate. Suzie is my niece, Penelope’s mother, so I used her as the misbehaver. In the book I also included Penelope’s father, Frankie, who is a police officer. In the book Frankie is one of Penelope’s friends who loves reading and wants to be a policeman when he grows up.

All of my Penelope books have a learning element. I have others in my files but since I used what they call, a Vanity Press, I don’t have the money to publish anymore right now. I may try to publish on my own, however the pictures would be different, since I hired an illustrator at Page Publishing. The pictures are technically mine, so I can reproduce them, but my books are still under contract so I hate to mess with any of that.

On Amazon, the books are about $11.95 each. I think there are sites where you can find them more around $10 each. On my blog I offer them signed. I have added on a fee for postage, since I would be mailing them out, but hey, I will sign them for anyone and make it personal.

I hope you will check out my books. The kids seem to love them and I know someday, when Penelope is old enough to understand (she is two now), she will love seeing her name in all those books.

Book: discover Prompts

https://wordpress.com/discover-wordpress/2020/04/14/discover-prompts-day-14-book/

I have four published books.

I published the four books in what is considered a Vanity Press. This is simply a publisher that asks for the payments upfront, instead of offering you a contract or publishing deal. There are pros and cons to this.

Pros: I got four books published with real ISBN numbers and out in real books stores, online, ebook format, etc.

Cons: A lot of publishers don’t consider this “publishing”. It is very expensive. You have to do your own marketing for the most part. They accept pretty much anything, even if it’s not that great.

Do I regret doing it? No, not at all. It gave me the confidence to take up writing seriously and to think of it as something I am good at. I still want a publishing deal. I did realize after publishing and then trying to go through an agent for a publishing deal, that my books had some flaws that I wish someone had pointed out to me. Nothing can be done now. I don’t think I will ever make all that money back but I can say I am a published author!

The four titles are Penelope, Penelope Picks her Pals, Penelope’s New Puppy, and Penelope still picks Suzie.
