This week the theme is to find a song that was released on an album titled Greatest Hits or Best Of.
“50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” • Artist: Paul Simon • Year: 1975 • Total weeks on Billboard Hot 100: 17 • Number of times covered: 77
A favorite song of mine – maybe my mom had it playing in the car when I was little? I think it was on the Muppet Show, too.
50 Ways to Leave Your Lover
“The problem is all inside your head,” she said to me
The answer is easy if you take it logically”
I’d like to help you in your struggle to be free
There must be 50 ways to leave your lover
She said, “It’s really not my habit to intrude
Furthermore, I hope my meaning won’t be lost or misconstrued”
But I’ll repeat myself at the risk of being crude
There must be 50 ways to leave your lover
50 ways to leave your lover
You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don’t need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don’t need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free
Ooh, slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don’t need to be coy, Roy
You just listen to me
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don’t need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free
She said, “It grieves me so to see you in such pain
I wish there was something I could do to make you smile again”
I said I appreciate that, and would you please explain
About the fifty ways
She said, “Why don’t we both just sleep on it tonight?
And I believe in the morning you’ll begin to see the light”
And then she kissed me and I realized she probably was right
There must be 50 ways to leave your lover
50 ways to leave your lover
You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don’t need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Oh, you hop on the bus, Gus
You don’t need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free
Slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don’t need to be coy, Roy
You just listen to me
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don’t need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

I like that in these comments I am learning new words and phrases like earworm song. That is exactly what it is! I’ve never heard that before.

Christine, I remember when this song was on the airwaves. I used to sing it as a mantra. Paul Simon has had so many good hits. This is one of his more light-hearted tunes..

I grew up watching them. I wrote a report a long time ago about them and Jim Henson and had written to him. I got a letter back but just a form letter, nothing personalized. My best friend and I used to know the names of just about every Muppet!

My husband really liked the Miley Cyrus version as well! I wasn’t crazy about it, which surprised me because I was expecting to love it, she is really talented.

A lovely song, but I think Paul Simon still owes us about 44 ways to leave our lovers, as he only gives us 6. Thanks for sharing your music, Christine.

Great choice for the theme. I’ve been a fan since the early S&G days, and he has given us so much great music.
