Sadje’s prompt guidelines

This week’s challenge invites participants to write a poem — in any form they prefer — centered on imagery.

A Heart in Pain

The ache is evident under
the constricted heart
being pressed by imaginary vices,
metal digits that bend
and hold and press
so that it can barely beat,
the vices are hands that
hold the heart tightly
squeezing to make it stop
not succeeding because
grief doesn’t kill
but when the vices release
so do the memories
and the hands reach
for the heart again.

  1. Christine, this one really hit me—the way you describe grief as vices gripping the heart feels so visceral and true. 💔 The release and return of those hands captures the cycle of memory and pain so vividly.
