W3 Prompt #173: Wea’ve Written Weekly – The Months After

https://skepticskaddish.com/2025/08/20/w3-prompt-173-weave-written-weekly/

We are invited to write an ekphrastic poem—a poem inspired by a work of art.

The Months After

The feelings come quickly but hope not to last
the happiness shrouded in cloudiness fast
No way to go forward, forgetting the past
When joy should be centered, sorrow is cast

The new life has come, the bundle of joy
Never meant more, no secretive ploy
With help from all sides, no one is coy
There is no escape route, all sounds will annoy

With help from outside the feelings will leave
The feelings of sadness and happiness weave
Wearing your heart out there on your sleeve
The weariness passing the love there believe

Postpartum, the real life, the things left to do
Will escape with the help, when the love pushes through

The first thing that came to mind when I saw this image was the feeling of having postpartum depression. It is a lonely feeling because you are supposed to be happy, you are supposed to feel overjoyed with your new little life, but a darkness covers you that feels heavy. With proper, professional help, there is a way out, a light at the end of the tunnel.

  1. Christine, your poem explores all the emotional complexity of parenthood, particularly going through a devastating postpartum experience. The mix of joy, exhaustion, and love is captured so well, with moments of vulnerability and raw emotion – thanks for sharing 💙
