Paula waited for the red Volvo to drive up. She had not met Jake, but he did tell her he would pick her up in his new car. Usually, Paula would meet the blind date at the pub but Michael knew him so she felt safe being picked up. Her feelings fizzled when he pulled up in a beat up Ford Ranger.

Hehe! And instead of being 6’2″ he was 5’8″ and balding!

“New car” would create certain expectations. Maybe he was joking.

Oh dear, not the best start! Hubby drove a Lada, and I insulted it with my first sentence ‘So that heap’s yours is it?’ OMG. not exactly a brilliant opening for friendship, but he didn’t take offence!

Of course I had to look up what kind of car that was and I have to say I love those boxy little things. I don’t think they have them in the states. Do they still make them?

They were Russian, but don’t exist now. We both had Yugos in the 1990s, mine was a 55a and Hubby’s was a 45a, but they were the same colour (red). I loved mine, she would take on BMWs at traffic lights and win (OK, the beamer soon caught up, but engine ratio to car size was spot on). A yellow one was featured in the Diehard with a Vengeance movie.
