The Silent Man

There is an old man, just below Alamo Bay
Where the tall treetops tip and the long grasses sway
He’s a quiet, kind fellow, a gent with white hair
With a pipe in his teeth and blank eyes that just stare
He sits and he waits as the clouds move away
He sits and he waits there day after day
What is he waiting for? Nobody knows
Merely sitting in silence as the wind softly blows
But inside of his head the questions do stir
Like Is that a real diamond? Is there really a cure?
He wonders and ponders questions like these
As he sits and he rests beneath tall shady trees
Once in a while you might hear him gasp
Sucking in air while his lungs risp and rasp
For sitting with him though no one can see
Is a virus or bug or some abnormality
And it travels through blood streams or other dark ways
It’ll kill him eventually, ending his days
But for now have a seat with him, ask him whats up
He’ll look and he’ll tell you, as he hands you a cup
Of tea that he brewed in his small dirty cave
How you have to be strong, be courageous and brave
For what?, you will wonder, he won’t give a clue
So you sit and you sip while you stare at your shoe
Did you bring back that diamond, the one with the curves
You can offer him that if you get up the nerve
Or simply relax, sip your tea and look around
But sit there in silence, just don’t make a sound.
