Monologue Poem Prompt
Write a monologue poem in which a character—historical, fictional, or original—takes center stage. Step into their voice and let them speak. Who are they, and whom are they addressing? Reveal their personality through their words, tone, and actions.
Guidelines
📍 Set the Scene – Your character must be seated on a bench. It could be a park bench, a courtroom seat, a workbench, or even the dreaded school “naughty bench.”
🤫 Use Subtext – What remains unsaid is just as important as what is spoken. Let hidden emotions or unspoken truths add depth.
🎭 Engage the Audience – Though alone, their words should feel directed at someone or something—whether a specific listener, a memory, or the universe itself.
💥 Finish Strong – End with a revelation, a twist, or a lingering thought that leaves an impact.
Ode to Care
Come over here, do you see
The tortured air surrounding me
As I sit here, alone and bored
My phone rings loud, hits a chord
For all around the sounds and smell
Tell of the others, sick and well
Who use this place to find their peace
Where my feelings quickly cease
I cannot take the musty air
My lungs are choking, as I stare
I want to sleep without a chance
Was that a bug, my backward glance
‘Cause institutions can’t stay clean
Its hard to control, with sights unseen
No siblings come, theres no one near
My insides churn, the time I fear
But all alone I feel the burn
Since each of us will have our turn

Christine, your poem ‘Ode to Care’ is powerful and thought provoking. The imagery of “the tortured air” and the “musty air” immerses us in the stifling atmosphere of the setting. I ache at the protagonist’s loneliness and isolation. The final line “each of us will have our turn” is poignant and reminds us of the shared inescapable human condition. This poem is brilliant.

Thank you so much. My father passed away yesterday so now this poem will have a different meaning for me. There won’t be anymore sitting and waiting…:(

The feelings of isolation, oncoming death, and abandonment are so relatable in your poem, Christine. It breaks my heart that this is the last stop for so many.
