100 Forms of Poetry: #81 Senryu

I’m back to my personal poetry challenge! I have not done a new poetry form from my list in a very long time.

Senryū is a Japanese poetic form that is similar to haiku. It is a short poem with three lines and 17 morae. Senryū poems are often cynical or darkly humorous, and are usually about human nature and its foibles.

Structure

  • Senryū poems are made up of three lines
  • The lines follow a 5-7-5 syllable pattern
  • Senryū poems are unrhymed

Content

  • Senryū poems are often cynical or darkly humorous
  • Senryū poems are usually about human nature and its foibles

Sneezing is awful
Depending on the power
Disaster happens
