I don’t like that stores have Christmas stuff out so early. I don’t think we should see Christmas until after Thanksgiving. I think it takes so much of the fun away and to be honest, how can kids get so excited over seeing Santa when they’ve been bombarded for three months? My mother used to cook for Christmas Eve and then I did when I had my new family. Now, it is really just David and I.

It does get overwhelming sometimes when Christmas is suddenly everywhere.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on Christmas. You’re so right – Christmas seems to last for 3 months and it gets earlier all the time.

Christmas Day is probably the only day I’ll do a roast dinner. I buy turkey pieces rather than a whole bird, but we have all the trimmings. We will treat ourselves to a carvery at the garden centre in a couple of weeks. It will be too busy and expensive to even consider having a Christmas meal out. Besides, Maya would miss out!

What is a carvery? Yes, if we were going to be here to enjoy all the left overs I would have spent the money on a turkey, probably just the breast.

Several pubs and garden centres have a carvery, where you can have a choice of usually 3 meats, and all the veg you want. Our garden centre has beef, ham or turkey (depending on cost determines how many slices you can have, but one is usually enough for us) and a selection of at least 10 veg. The gravy is a food group on its own. Originally for one set price you could ask for a slice of all three meats, and go up as many times as you wanted for extra veg. It’s still good value for money even if your plate size now determines how much you can get on it and you can only fill it once.

We used to take the Mums for a carvery on Mother’s Day or their birthdays. My Mum loved the outing, MIL was always critical of something and make a fuss, then leave most of her meal whereas the rest of us enjoyed ours. For dessert, my Mum and I opted for the ice cream sundaes, Hubby his treacle sponge with endless custard, and MIL would insist on apple pie with cream then leave half of it. She was very difficult at times but we do have some fond memories.

I mostly agree. I do love the fact that my spouse starts a Christmassy WhatsApp group for the family in August each year, but only because it’s a (half) joke.

See, something fun like that has a purpose and it isn’t just to sell more stuff! One year we got tired of buying gifts for everyone, not knowing exactly who would be there, etc. and I didn’t want to do an ordinary swap so we did a dollar store swap. It was so funny! I think my son received a pregnancy test! Lol.
