Jake walked down the road, searching for the house. It used to be only a few turns from his house but now no matter how many turns he takes, he can’t find it. Heavy in his arms, the books he already read and no longer wanted to keep, go heavier and he thought he was going to drop them all.
Suddenly, Mr. Miles walked down his driveway from the direction of his garage.
“Hey there Jake! Where are you headed with all those books?”
“Mr. Miles, I was looking for the library house. I wanted to put these books in and take some new ones out. I’ll put those back too when I am done!”
“Well, Jake, you are partly in luck. I had one of those down by the end of my driveway. I took it down because I never see anyone taking or leaving books. I took it down. But, it is still in my garage! Want to see?”
“Sure! Can we put it back though? I really wanted to use it!”
“I suppose. It can’t hurt!”

I have plans on building a small neighborhood lending library for my yard. I want one for a few reasons. First, I have always loved the idea of these. Second, it is such a great idea to remind people of all ages how wonderful it is to read. I wish kids knew what it was like to love going to the library, looking through so many books, trying to determine which ones are worthy of taking home for the week. As a kid this was fun!
Years ago I saw one of these little libraries and loved it. There aren’t as many around, I think the upkeep and maintenance are what people don’t want. I wish they were everywhere!

Lovely. I can see these two becoming a great team.

There used to be 3 of them on my bike riding route. Now there are 2.

Yes, there were more even just a few years back. I guess no one wants to care for them. I will eventually build one for sure.

Well, I guess I’ll jump in. We have one, too, right next to the Leatherstocking Trail. People go for a hike and come back with a book! Taking care of mind and body!
And … my son is the librarian at our village public library.

I wanted to work at our library but even with all my degrees in education I wasn’t qualified.

We have one of these libraries near our house and our friends’ kids run over and check out the selection every time they come over. The more libraries, the better, I say :).

They’re wonderful those little libraries, I saw one in a supermarket the other day! What a great place to put one.
I’d love to have one in my own garden though, the treasures you could find would be wonderful, good luck with it.

Dear Christine,
There’s one of these little lending libraries not too far from my house. Great idea.
