Using the poems as examples, write your own in the voice of one who has been stood up in no uncertain terms on a meaningful occasion.
How many years does it take to heal
from the hurt that is inflicted
upon the young hearts?
How many friends does it take to start
the party and have fun?
How many times do you have to remember
to ask about their appearance?
Luckily, young children don’t remember
every little hurt
when they are loved.
They find joy in the decorations that still exist.
They find comfort in the food prepared.
They don’t see the tears roll down my cheeks.
Instead,
I was able to replace every broken feeling
with a bit of innocent love.
Happiness is the event to focus on.
Love is the only guest you need to invite.

This is wonderful. As a mother, I relate 100%.

That last line really gets to me. John Lennon was right.

Pertinent questions, Christine, and a poignant poem, Children are very forgiving, and yes, love is the only guest you need to invite.

Gorgeous poem and so true! Children feel the love and nothing else will be remembered! If only we could do the same!

Oh how this brought a lump to my throat! A parent’s perspective and a child’s, both influenced by love, one seeking to cushion the blow and the other cushioned by it. Your rhetorical questions at the beginning set it up so well, Christine, the rawness, the protective motions, and then this beautiful line like a jewel held aloft: “I was able to replace every broken feeling/with a bit of innocent love” — brings it all home again to the “only guest” that matters. Beautifully written. 💖
