The City

Love cities or hate them, for today’s poetics, I would like you to write a poem showing the beauty of your city or why you love the city you live in presently. If you do not dwell in a city these days, write about the city you had lived in earlier.

My City Life

Bustling people and slow moving cars
honking and noises like no other world
So many lights that its hard to see stars
Getting there quickly makes some come unfurled.
I never have lived there and probably won’t
since no one I know has similar dreams
Museums and other things to do will taunt
I know I would like it or at least so it seems

  1. It is hard to see stars. Both of my children live in the city and the always are amazed to look at the night sky here in the country. I guess the city slickers never get used to seeing stars. Now the museums I like!

    Great lines, Christine!

I spent 57 of my 64 years living in big cities. I’m so much happier now, living in a place where I can drive from one end of town to the other in just 15 minutes, and I have mountains on three sides of me which I hike around in. Much friendlier people, too!

  3. Short and sweet, you captured city life in a nutshell, Christine. I am familiar with those ‘bustling people and slow moving cars’ and ‘so many lights that it’s hard to see stars’. Great use of the senses. I am so much happier in a rural environment, peace and quiet, and I can see stars!

  4. Christine, your juxtaposition of the city lights obscuring stars adds a touch of melancholy; and your contemplation on the allure of city living, despite not having similar dreams, is expressed with simplicity and clarity. Well done!
