But Mommy, there are no trains here.

Jimmy, you don’t see any trains but that doesn’t mean they don’t come through here anymore. Even if you haven’t ever seen one, I’ve heard them, and if you aren’t careful you’ll get knocked right out of your shoes.

Mommy, Can’t we hear the train if it is coming?

No, Jimmy. The sound is muffled by the trees. Do you remember when I told you my friend was hurt by the train when I was little?

Yes. Well, no, I don’t remember the whole story.

Well, when we were little we would race here and see who could get over the fence first before hiding in the undergrowth. My mommy never knew about the train. So, one day we were all out here and we were collecting rocks. We would line them all up on the rale and judge who had the best collection. Then one day while we were in the shade and Molly was still looking for rocks….well, then…

Mommy?

Yes, Timmy?

Are you afraid I will get hit by a train?

No, not if you stay away from the track.

Can we still hunt for rocks?

  1. There is something fascinating about trains. I don’t mean the streamlined ones of today. I mean the old-fashioned ones with a real conductor and steam coming out. And making noise that keeps one from sleeping.
    I liked your story. 🙂
