24 Seasons Syllabic Poetry Challenge, No. 1, 9/26/23, #TankaTuesday

Autumn in Florida is very different from Autumn in Connecticut. Up north this was a time when plants outside died or lay dormant for the winter. Down here, it is a great time to start growing things as the temperatures are not so hot. I will be using “ripening fruits” and Choka Poetry. The Choka is a Japanese long poetry form that consists of alternating five and seven-syllable lines, with the last two lines having seven syllables each. The length of the poem is indefinite.

Ripening fruits

Finally days cool
The hours of sun grow less
Buds will now blossom
Lush fruit to grow and to pick
Soil not so dry
Sun’s heat cools much more quickly
no need to water
For the rain will come tonight
And nourish the plants for you
ripening fruits grow
ready to pick the next day.

  1. This is lovely, Christine. I was born in Florida, and lived from one end of it to the other. The last city I lived in was Jacksonville, which had the feeling of fall in October and the weather was beautiful. I now reside in a suburb of Atlanta and love experiencing the four seasons.

  2. Fabulous! Oh yes, I remember living in Florida well. One year, I grew cabbages through the winter. It was fun to harvest them in December. LOL! Well done, Christine. I like your choice of kigo words. You will have fun adding new words to your kigo list for the seasons. 🧡
