Daily writing prompt
How would you design the city of the future?

So, I’m going to write this on the fly. I’m sure there will be a lot of hurdles I have not addressed but these are some of my ideas. If you don’t like them then you can live in a different city! 😵‍💫

Despite wanting green grass, I think with all the growth of the population there would have to be more multiunit buildings. That being said each would have it’s own balcony. Each complex would have a dog area, a kid area, and a sport-type area. There would be plenty of places to sit and relax along nicely manicured walkways and sidewalks. Shops would be required to clean their storefront every day before closing to avoid trash. Water fountains would be available but depending on their location may only be available to people who pay for their use. For example, only people living in Complex A would be able to use that water fountain. That way if it gets gross then you know it is someone in the complex who is gross. All municipal buildings would be located in the center of the city so that all residents have the same opportunity to get to them. Shops would then be in a sort of ring around the municipal buildings so that they are easily accessible to workers and to the residents who live on the outskirts. There wouldn’t be a slum area, as government taxes would pay to clean all areas. In addition, one stipulation of living in this particular city is that you must commit to at least one hour a week per person for community services. This could be trash pickup, lawn/grounds maintainance/ etc. This would have to be logged and kept on record with your tax payments. If you don’t pay taxes or do your service you are evicted unless there are circumstances which require alternatives. For example, people who are unable to work outside may have a job of “neighborhood watch” for their hour a week. People who are incapable due to physical or mental impairments would be given alternative responsibilities when applicable so that they too can feel like they are contributing to society.

  1. I like the idea of one hour of community service per week, especially towards cleaning. It’s just one hour a week but will surely make a lot of difference.

  2. I like the idea but…people in Complex A may not want people from Complex B to visit, even if they have family or friends. (Racism) The rich would find a way not to do community service or pay taxes, which would create a ghetto situation. (Nepotism) Faking impairments to get alternative responsibilities would become the norm. Actually, this would make a great dystopian book or movie.
