Fandango’s Story Starter #38

Fandango is the host of Story Starter: https://fivedotoh.com/2022/03/22/fandangos-story-starter-38/

This week’s Story Starter teaser is:

I heard a sound outside, so I turned on the front porch light, opened the front door, and…

My turn!

I heard a sound outside, so I turned on the front porch light, opened the front door, and there sitting on the small table was a note. It was a simple white envelope and it had been placed under my “centerpiece”, well it was just a small bucket for rocks and other treasures I found on my walks with the dog. I looked around but couldn’t see anyone near. How had someone gotten away so quickly?

My first thought was of those letters, back in the 90’s, where envelopes were being laced with powdery poisons so that the people who opened them would inhale the contents and drop dead. But who would want to poison me, and why that way? It made no sense. Then I thought it was some sort of chain letter, the kind where you have to send it back to the person who sent it and ten other people or else you’ll have bad luck. Ugh, I don’t even know ten people I could send it to so this would be a chance I couldn’t get away from.

Standing there looking at the note I found myself smiling and chuckling softly as I wonder why my mind goes to evil and death when it could just as well be a winning lottery ticket or an envelope with some cash in it. Maybe whoever stole my wallet has decided to give me back the contents, sans the money, and knew where I lived since they had my driver’s license. Oh, that would be a great surprise.

I walked forward and gingerly picked up the paper folded beneath the bucket. I turned it in my hand, wondering whose spit was on the envelope and had they known they would leave behind DNA by licking the glue on the envelope. If this person was taking that kind of risk then I can risk opening it and seeing what is inside. I eased my pointer finger under the corner when the glue was not stuck and pulled the envelope open.

Oh my goodness! I couldn’t believe what my eyes were seeing.

*****For any participants that do NOT like restrictions, please feel free to participate in any way you would like. It is great to read the contributions!****

  1. Set up a timer or sit near a clock so you can keep track of the six minutes you will be writing.
  2. You can either use one of the prompts (photo or written) or you can free-write.
  3. Get ready and write for 6 minutes, that is it! Can you write a complete story? Can you think of a new Sonnet? Can you write 400 words? 400? 500? There are no restrictions on what kind of writing you do, but you should try to be actively writing for six minutes.
  4. After you are done writing, include your word count and then post back to this page #Simply6Minutes or include your link in the comments section. Pingbacks are enabled.
  5. *Feel free to leave your work completely unedited. I believe it is good to see, especially for new writers, that even very seasoned writers don’t write a perfect first draft.*
  6. Have fun, challenge yourself if you’d like, read and respond to others’ posts.

Thank you for participating!

Here is my contribution!

Like a lonely bird afraid to fly
I sit and watch the world go by
I sit and wonder where I am
And think of all the hype and glam
of worlds around that have no strife
of being happy as David’s wife
To be alone but not afraid
And live with the mistakes I’ve made
To know that when I am alone
I’m not afraid for I’ve been shown
That love will go with me each day
and keep me safe while on my way
to places that I want to go
places I don’t even know
Where people live like kings and queens
or some by just their simple means
but happy to be alive and well
knowing their own tale to tell
will brighten up the darkest day
and to this fine hope I want to pray
that people live like I live here
Thankful for all far and near
for I have more than I could stand
although they’re spread across the land
but in my heart they always stay
to brighten up the darkest day
beyond my dreams or wishes too
Thankful for friends and family who…

times up! (192 words)
