Castle Walls

Cannons are all black
They blow out a big ball.
Kings, they hate to see them,
break their castle wall.

Its rolled up to the edge
of the moat around the yard
the ball will fly into the stone
it really isn’t hard.

The wick is lit with fire
and burns down quick and bright
and knocks down walls of castles
mostly in the night.

The people they go running
perhaps with their last breath
The walls come crashing down then
sometimes causing death.

Craving Isolation

I crave isolation.
After that first call
I wanted to close my door
and hide under the covers.
Two children
meant more to me
than isolation.

I crave isolation.
After the second call
I wanted to close my door
and hide under the covers.
One daughter and new love
meant more to me
than isolation.

I crave isolation.
No other calls have come
I still want to close my door
and hide under the covers.
People who love me
let me know
I mean more to them
than isolation.

I am learning
to resist the craving
for isolation.

The Hickory Tree

There are days that I know
the best days were when
we were together.
We were able to hold each other up
and keep each other grounded.
We had each others’ backs
and trusted each other.
The Hickory Tree was slowly
cut down.
For the branches that have now
been moved to a new woodpile,
you know who you are.
If I could have that tree back
I would replant it.
Knowing trees can’t always be replanted
I will keep it in my mind
as a beautiful reminder
of the old days.
