We didn’t know what force was lifting us, but is was surreal, so gentle and calming, despite the fact we were being lifted above the earth. We had simply been out looking for fireflies.

“Dawn, do you want to go or not?”

“I told you yes, but don’t you think we need to wait until it is really dark?”

“It is really dark. Come on!”

We grabbed our sweatshirts and glass jars from mom’s collection of canning materials, and headed out into the yard. Brian and I were determined to catch at least one firefly in a jar to observe for our school project. All we needed was about 15 minutes of observation, maybe a bit more if we could without killing the poor creature. Brian said it would take a lot more to kill a bug like that, but I didn’t want to take any chances.

We had been running around the backyard, goofing with each other, saying someone was in the woods, when all of a sudden we both heard a humming noise.

“Did you hear that?”

“Yeah, Dawn, what was it? It sounded like some sort of fan.”

We stood silently, looking up toward the sky. Nothing was there but you could hear something. Suddenly, I felt my body being lifted slightly.

“Brian, I feel like something is lifting me up?”

“Yeah, I do too. This is weird.”

“What is happening?”

Just as I said it the lifting quickened and I as I glanced in the direction it was pulling me, I saw a bright doorway. Was that a spacecraft? Scared out of my mind I looked for Brian. He was just under me, being lifted toward that same door. No matter what was happening to us, at least we were together.
